A haunting night at the aged care home... When AtomDekNurse finds herself face to face with the ghostly name 'Somjai' whispered through the shadows of memory.
An elderly resident with dementia was wandering around in her pyjamas several times. I gently guided her back to her room, even though the hallway lights had already been turned off. Thankfully, the Christmas trees scattered around gave off a warm glow, so it wasn’t completely dark.
When we got to her room, she started talking — rambling, really — saying that someone had come to rummage through her things. Honestly, I wasn’t surprised. She often mentions someone stealing from her due to her dementia.
But then she suddenly mentioned a name: “Somjai.” 🫢 That made me pause.
You see, a few months ago, there was a resident named Somjai in that very room… who had recently passed away.
The lights were dim, and the only thing on was a silent TV screen. The atmosphere was already chilling. Then she said, “Somjai is behind you… she just went into the wardrobe.” 😱
After that, I helped her settle into bed quickly and ran a 4x100 straight back to my friends! 🏃♀️
Was it real… or just her mind playing tricks? I honestly don’t know.
In aged care, it’s common for elderly residents to come and go. If these kinds of things are real, maybe it’s not that surprising.
I’ve also had times when I was so tired from studying and working that I thought I saw shadows moving in the dark corridors — maybe just my blurry eyes, or maybe… who knows?
I’m usually not scared, but moments like these definitely give me the chills.
If you plan to study or work in this field, be prepared. There might be nights that shake your nerves a little… but we must carry on. Be brave, be reliable — never leave your patients behind. 💪
